  2. Music of the Great Depression

    October 28, 2021, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
    @

Weston COA, Ground Level, Community Center

During the Stock Market Crash of 1929 popular singers responded to the economic depression in the U.S. in many different ways. Happy Days Are Here Again was the first of many attempts to cheer up a devastated citizenry, followed by a string of optimistic hits by Ted Lewis. In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town and Woody Guthrie’s Dust Bowl Ballads offered commiseration to thousands who were forced to give up their homes. Bing Crosby’s Brother Can You Spare a Dime and My Forgotten Man went so far as to criticize the U.S. government for neglecting its veterans and working people. The romantic sentiments and dazzling footwork of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films were a happy distraction to the Depression’s despair and drudgery. Presented by music historian John Clark. Call the COA at 781-786-6280 to register. John will present The Music of World War II on 11/22.
