“You tax me for a wizard!” 80-year-old George Jacobs, crippled and toothless, exploded. “You may as well tax me for a buzzard! I have done no harm.” On May 10, 1692, both he and his granddaughter Margaret had been arrested and transported to Salem Town, one of 200 accused of witchcraft. A skeptic of the witchcraft hysteria from the start, he begged the judges to see the situation clearly, but to no avail. In this presentation, we will consider some of the possible causes of the Salem Witch Trials and the “evidence” which led to Mr. Jacobs’ hanging on August 19, one of the 5 men and 14 women who met a similar end. Presenter Marilyn Harris worked in education for over 40 years and in her retirement has continued to teach classes on history and travel. Call the COA at 781-786-6280 to register.
